How Rcoms Installed an AC Soft Start for Hurricane Outages in Houston

As a Lead Technician at Rcoms, I’ve seen firsthand how Houstonians prepare for hurricane season. It’s a familiar September ritual: stocking up on water, non-perishables, and batteries. Many forward-thinking homeowners also invest in a portable generator. But there's a common, and often frustrating, gap in preparedness that we see all the time. A client recently called us from Hitchcock, a neighborhood filled with those classic 1950s Ranch-style homes, facing this exact dilemma. He had a powerful portable generator, ready to keep the lights and refrigerator on during an outage. The problem? His central air conditioner.

Every time he tested his setup, the generator would roar to life, handle the fridge, but then sputter and trip the moment the AC tried to kick on. The massive power surge from the air conditioner's compressor was simply too much for his generator to handle, leaving him to face the prospect of enduring a multi-day outage in the sweltering, post-hurricane humidity. He had the power, but not for the one thing that makes a Houston summer bearable: cool air. He called Rcoms looking not just for a part, but for a solution to this critical weak link in his emergency plan.

The Assessment

When our team arrived at the client's charming mid-century home, we immediately understood the challenge. The house itself, built in the post-war boom, was solid, but its infrastructure, including the central air system, reflected a different era of electrical demands. The client walked us through his setup: a well-maintained, but standard, 4-ton central AC unit paired with a robust 7,500-watt portable generator. On paper, it seemed like it should work. The generator's running wattage was more than sufficient for the AC's needs once it was operating.

The real culprit, as we explained, was inrush current. When an AC compressor starts, it demands a massive, instantaneous burst of electricity - often 5 to 7 times its normal running amperage. This jolt, lasting only a fraction of a second, is what was overwhelming his generator's inverter and causing it to trip. It’s a common issue we see when trying to run air conditioner on portable generator Houston-wide. The generator is designed to protect itself from such surges, but in doing so, it was preventing the AC from ever starting.

We hooked up our diagnostic tools to the AC unit and measured the startup amperage. The readings confirmed our suspicions: the compressor was drawing nearly 60 amps on startup. The generator, capable of providing around 30 amps continuously, simply couldn't meet that peak demand. The client needed a way to smooth out that initial power spike, and that's exactly where our expertise at Rcoms comes in.

Our Solution

After a thorough assessment and explaining the dynamics of inrush current to the homeowner, we proposed the definitive solution: an AC soft start installation. Houston residents are increasingly turning to this technology as a cost-effective way to make their homes more resilient. An AC soft start is a sophisticated device that intelligently manages the power sent to the compressor motor, gradually ramping it up instead of hitting it with a sudden jolt.

Our plan was straightforward and designed for minimal disruption:

  1. Equipment Selection: We selected a top-tier soft start module known for its reliability and effectiveness in inrush current reduction for an AC compressor. The goal wasn't just to make it work, but to ensure a durable, long-term solution.
  1. Safety First: As with any project undertaken by Rcoms, the first step on-site was safety. Our certified technician completely de-energized the outdoor condenser unit at the breaker and the local disconnect box. We verified with a multimeter that no voltage was present before proceeding.
  1. Precise Installation: The technician opened the AC unit's electrical compartment and carefully identified the compressor's run, start, and common wires. Following the manufacturer's schematic, he integrated the soft start module into the circuit. This is where professional installation matters. A messy or incorrect wiring job can damage the compressor or the soft start device itself. Our Rcoms technician ensured every connection was secure, insulated, and neatly routed to maintain airflow and serviceability.
  1. System Learning: Once installed, many modern soft starts have a
